This lavender color looks exceptional in person but is hard to capture in pictures. I made several adjustments using photoshop trying to get the look of this fine tunable instrument close to how it looks in person but did not adjust the color in the video.

Another MILLTONE update from NY composer Mark Bennett

It is always great to hear from New York composer Mark Bennett. Here is a cut and paste of his most recent email.

“Hi Larry.

I hope the year has been going well for you and yours!

Once Again the Milltone has sounded in NYC theater.

An Illiad. Produced by the New York Theater Workshop. A one man re-telling of Homers epic Poem The Milltone is featured in a section titled “Achilles Shield” as the only instrument played by a double bass player for that chapter. (The rest of the production is accompanied soley by the live double bass, amplfied, acoustic, and processed.

The piece was performed in NYC, Off- Broadway, at the New York Theater Workshop this past winter and is going to be performed in La Jolla and Berkeley this summer and fall. I credit you and the drum in the program. The musician was very featured as he played the drum, and they were both beautifully lit. I wish there had been a production photo of that moment, but I think the photographers didn’t take one…..I have to be more on them about that when those moments come up. The show was a critical, and audience, success. And the Sound Design, Lights, and the production have all been nominated for Lortel Awards. (the Lortels don’t tend to nominate “music for plays” so they basically are acknowledging the score in the sound design. If you go to the New York Theater Workshop’s website you can get more info on the production.

As I think I wrote you last summer, The Milltone ringing out at Epidaurus in the Sam Mendes/Kevin Spacey Richard III, in the most ancient working amphitheater in the world, was a truly thrilling moment for us all. That sound, un-amplified, in that ancient space, was absolutely magical.
